I’m Jennifer Smith. I love interior design, traveling, planning events, and cooking for my friends and family. This site is a hodge-podge of all that and more. I graduated four years ago (wow, it’s been that long!) with a degree in Interior Design from the University of Georgia. Shortly after graduation, I married my high school sweetheart, Justin. He’s my best friend and without a doubt the best decision I ever made was to marry him (even if he did go to Georgia Tech). He’s a huge reason this company even exists! Without his love and encouragement, Something Like That Designs would never have been born.
We love to travel and spent the better part of last year traveling the United States. Justin could work from anywhere, so we packed what we could fit in my Honda Accord and drove across the country to California. We spent an amazing 3 months in San Diego, 1 month in San Francisco, and 3 months in Seattle before coming back to Atlanta. It was an incredible experience and only fueled my love of design and good food.
Before officially settling back into life in Atlanta, we took one more trip…we spent three weeks traveling through Italy and Greece. It was a dream come true. We came back with fun memories, a renewed love for traveling and lots of delicious recipes (which I hope to share with you!). We were incredibly blessed to be able to take a trip like that and I know we’ll be talking about those memories for the rest of our lives!
When we finally moved back to Atlanta, it took lots of prayer and support to make my dream of owning my own business come true. I’ve wanted to be an interior designer for as long as I know. I remember being 10 years old and drawing floor plans to remodel my parent’s house. On one occasion, my parents came home in the middle of my brother and me rearranging the living room furniture. It wouldn’t have been so bad except for the fact that we moved an entertainment center and a piano!
No obstacle has ever been able to keep me from my passion for great design. Not a heavy piano, and certainly not a slow economy. I believe that the face of design has changed over the past few years. People continue to want luxurious designs, but they want it at a fraction of the cost. That’s where I come in! I believe you can have a beautiful home without breaking the bank.
I’ve learned to do amazing things with even the smallest of budgets by taking expensive ideas and giving you Something Like That for a fraction of the cost. There’s no reason not to have a home that truly reflects your personality and style! This site will serve as a place for me to share projects I’m working on, ideas you can implement in your own home and all the fun things I find while out deal hunting in Atlanta.
While I’ve always known I wanted to be an interior designer, the past couple years have revealed another passion of mine: food. I’m happiest when I’m cooking for friends and family and I absolutely love to try new things. Of course, it wasn’t always like that…
When we first got married, my husband refused to eat any vegetables. I grew up eating broccoli and green beans, but my knowledge of vegetables was extremely limited. If it didn’t come out of the freezer or a can, I didn’t cook it.
A couple years ago I became interested in learning more about organic foods. When I began to look into the reasons for eating organically, I was opened up to a world of new vegetables and grains that I had never eaten. It took some time, but I started adding new foods to our diet each week and took more care in learning how to prepare each dish. (Let me tell you, roasting vegetables will make even the pickiest eater want a second helping!) I’m proud to say that my husband will now not only eat vegetables, but he actually asks for them!
I plan to share with you the changes we’ve made, why we made them, and how to eat organically on a budget. (Yes, it can be done!) And don’t think for a minute that your family won’t like anything that isn’t a meat and cheese casserole. Trust me, I’ve been there and lived to tell the tale! I’ll share recipes you’ll enjoy serving to your own family that will change the way your family thinks about eating healthy.
I’m incredibly excited about this opportunity and so thankful to my supportive husband and wonderful friends and family for helping me every step of the way. Thanks for taking the time to visit my site and I look forward to sharing my love of design and food with you!
