How To: Jewelry Wall, Part 2.
If you thought yesterday’s project was easy, just wait until you see what I made with just three items. Yep, THREE!
You’ll need a long dowel (the white rod in the photo below), a couple of screw in hooks and a few plastic anchors. I have to say, the dowel was actually pretty expensive. It was $0.97 at Home Depot AND they cut it to size for me. I had enough to do the entire project with just one $0.97 dowel. The hooks were only a couple bucks as were the plastic anchors. This entire project costs under $10.

Use the plastic anchors to attach the hooks to the wall (so you don’t have to hit studs) and you have the perfect custom sized rod to display all of your jewelry! I painted my rod white, but you could do any color of the rainbow.
I LOVE that I can see everything I own in one quick glance. It also looks so dang pretty! If I want to grab something, I simply unclasp a necklace or lift up the bar for a bracelet. Easy as pie.
I also made room for a few pieces that wouldn’t work well on the wall, like my stud earrings and perfume. That’s where the shelf came in handy.
I can’t tell you how fun it is to have such an organized (and girly!) closet. In fact, I think I’ll start calling it a dressing room. Put a box of Thin Mints and a chair in there and I’d be happy for weeks!
So there you have it, my wall of jewelry. The entire project–shelf, earring frame and jewelry rods came in at around $30. Not bad for a completely custom wall!
I still have a few more details to share, like how to easily paint stripes and how to turn an item from sale to clearance, so check back this week for more easy ideas!

Very nice. I do think that you need more jewelry.
Cannot wait to see what else you come up with.
Love ya
i would like to know what kind of wire u put yur ear rings on .. please write back…
Hi Sandy! I got the wire from my local Ace Hardware store. It’s the same wire you would buy to make a chicken coop
.
I just made this (thanks for the inspiration!) and spent a whole morning looking for a store that sold chicken wire by the foot instead of by the roll. If anyone doesn’t want to shell out upwards of $8 for a roll, try your local farmer’s co-op. I live in St. Louis and there aren’t anymore Ace Hardware stores int he are.
I did the same thing with the frame, but I used some left over screen I had from rescreening a window. I think I paid something like $5 at walmart. You can even paint it. Also, if you don’t have a frame, you can get smaller ones at the dollar store or at a thrift store then screen them and pattern them on the wall. Some screen is small enough to hold post earrings when not being worn. About the only thing I couldn’t hang was my rings. Thanks for all your ideas here, Jennifer. I love them.
Thanks for the tips Jean!
go to the craft store and get a little dowel. I found one small enough for rings. It just rests in the hooks.
I have to say I am an extreme bargain shopper. For the frame you need, why not go to a second hand store. You will be amazed at the choices of frames you can find in them. Take a look around, you may find ideas for more projects!
I’ve been browsing your site for already past 1/2 hour. You have so many great ideas and I’m totally inspired to make some changes in my house!! You have most organized closet!
Thanks Nami! Glad that you came away with some inspiration for your own home. I’d love to hear what changes you end up making! Now if only I could take photos of food like you do…
Hi there… great ideas. I’m a beading fool and have tons of necklaces and bracelets I need to organize. I love How To: Jewelry Wall, Part 2, but I can’t find Part 1. can you help?
I’m a dork… found it! Thanks
Thanks! Glad you found it
.
Guess I’m a dork too. I can’t find Part 1.
This is amazing! I am moving to a new apartment in July from my parents house and have been looking for cool ways to display my jewelry… I cannot wait to do this its awesome!
Thanks Regan! Send me a pic if you do!
That is amazing! Can you tell me about the size of frame and sizes of dowel rods you used? Thanks so much!
Thanks Cheri! The dowels I used were about 1/2″ in diameter. You just want to make sure that whatever dowels you use will fit in your hooks. The frame I used was a 12×24 frame from Target.
this looks so awesome and I’m totally doing this this summer! I did want to know where you recommend getting that earring rack
Thanks AJ! I used a frame from Target, popped out the back/glass and added chicken wire. Check TJ Maxx for cheap frames and Ace Hardware for the wire!
That is an excellent idea!! thank you so much!
so perfect. May use this idea for our little artisan shoppe that is opening soon. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Barbara! I’d love to see a picture if you do use it
. Good luck with your store!
how do you get the bracelets off if they don’t have a clasp?
I slide them over the other bracelets and they come off pretty easy.
Hi, I may be a total dunce but, can you please explain what the anchors are for? I’m so confused haha! Do they help you put the hooks in the wall….? Thank you!
Not a dunce at all! They’re for when you can’t put the hooks directly into a stud in the wall. If you just put them directly into drywall, there won’t be much support and the hooks could fall out if enough weight it put on them.
I just found this on pinterest and I love it. I also used eye hooks to store my necklaces, check it out here: http://projectsatthepicketts.blogspot.com/2012/07/great-eye-dea.html?m=1
I’ve been reading through your blog and I really enjoy it. I love alll of your quick updates!
Thanks Kathleen! Great minds think alike
.
THANK SO MUCH FOR THE INFO I FINISHED IT AND IT LOOKS GREAT.. THANKS FOR SHARING
Thanks Mattie!!
How do you make the earring frame? I’m new to the whole DIY thing and I’m inspired
Here’s the link to the tutorial, http://somethinglikethatdesigns.com/how-to-jewelry-wall-part-1/
I was wondering how you made the earring frame? Where did you get the frame? Thank you!! :]
Never mind! I just saw the comment above, haha.
Great ideas!! Also, If you want to be able to add more earrings to the frame, use window screen instead of chicken wire. The smaller holes allow you to hang more earrings! It works great- just staple gun the wire to the back of the frame!!
Love that idea Courtney!
Very nice, my daughter loves it and wants all of your jewelry lol. It keeps everything so organized!
Ha! Thank you Jennifer!
Hi Jennifer!
I was looking over the comments people posted and you said the dowel was 1/2″ in diameter. I was just wondering what were the lengths of each rod that you asked Home Depot to cut!
I know that you customized it yourself, but I just wanted to ballpark how long I want mine to be. This will be my first DIY project, so I am excited!
Thanks so much <3
Hi Susan! The longest dowel for the bracelets is about 24″, the top necklace dowel is about 18″ and the bottom necklace dowel is about 12″. Have fun with your first DIY project!
how do you attach the wire onto the frame? and how to you attach the frame to the wall??
Nicole- I just popped the wire into the frame and bent it a bit to fit. It was a tight fit so I didn’t need to use anything else. To mount it on the wall I just used a nail into a stud or you could use a picture hanger.
Great idea! A suggestion for you… you may want to buy some “S” hooks to hang from the bars and then hang your necklaces on the “S” hooks. That way you can remove a necklace from the center with ease.
Thanks Jen! Great idea!
I love this! It’s just what I’m looking for! What size hooks did you use then? I am getting started on this project today – you are amazing! Thank you!
Thanks Kenzie! I can’t remember the exact size, but I think it was 3/4″. I just took my dowels over to the hook section and found one that was just a bit bigger. Have fun with your weekend project! I’d love to see a pic when you’re done
,
I have been looking for something to help me organize my jewelry so I can see them all, but what they sell at the stores its so small…
thank you will be making it soon
Have fun making it Jeannette!
Thanks for this! Here is my wall: http://brknmasterpiece.blogspot.com/2012/09/pinterest-success.html
Looks great Jessica! I’m jealous you live in St. Louis. I now have a huge craving to go eat at Pappy’s and grab a frozen oreo custard at Ted Drewe’s
.
Hi
I love the idea and I so want to do this but my only problem is that I don’t have a closte my dressing table or a rectangular table which I coverd and call a dressing table is infront of my bed and a oval antique mirror above it is it possible for me to do it in that space just below the mirror? And will it look ok in an open plan bedroom thanks naz
Naz- You could probably do a small scale version under the mirror and it would still look great
.
I work at a jewelry store, so I have a ton of jewelry at home and it’s not organized, but I love this!! I’m going to start this project
I bet you have lots of gorgeous jewelry! Have fun with the project
.
How do you make the one with the mesh next to it please? Xx
Hi Jess! Here’s the link for how to make it. http://somethinglikethatdesigns.com/how-to-jewelry-wall-part-1/
Sooooo, I LOVE this idea, thank you for sharing! I have read the tutorial and all of the comments, but I’m still a little confused about how the anchors and hooks work together. Do you install the anchor and put the hook directly in that? I’m just wondering where the screw comes into play if it does at all…thanks for clarifying!!
Hi Courtney! You will use the anchors anywhere you don’t hit a stud. Simply use a drill bit to make a hole where you want the anchor to go. Make sure the hole is a bit smaller than the anchor. Then hammer the anchor into the hole. The hook will screw directly into that. If you’re still a bit confused, do what I do and talk to someone at the home improvement store when you buy the supplies. They’ll be able to show you in person. Hope that helps!
Love this, but surprised the issue of dust hasn’t been addressed. Dust makes your jewelry dull. Any suggestions? I’ve been playing around with the idea of enclosing a system like yours inside of a large elaborate picture frame built out with 2x4s but haven’t attempted it yet. Has anyone else?
Gigi- I haven’t noticed much dust on my jewelry so it hasn’t been an issue for me. The picture frame idea sounds interesting though. Good luck!
Hi! I love this idea and I’ve been looking for a frugal way to create a jewlery wall. I’m desperately in need of one. How long are the top, middle, and last rods?
I love this idea. I need help finding part 1. Thanks
i super love your idea.,can i re-blog it.thanks
Hi Rein- I’m happy for you to re-blog this project as long as you give me credit and link back to my site.
Great idea! I did something similar several years ago with the hooks and dowels, for spools of ribbon. I got the long (4″ or longer) screw-in hooks which are a bit harder to find.
Saw this posted on FB & love the idea. I have tons of unused frames I can use for the earring holder. Hubby gifted me a beautiful multi drawer jewelry box, but I still have fumble around looking for my earring choice & again to find it’s mate. Planning to paint & embellish a frame or two for gifts. Thanks for the great ideas. Hoping to find Part I instructions.
This is such an amaizing idea! What were the measurements of your dowels?
Hi Renee- The dowels were about 24″, 18″ and 12″. You could really use any size you want and just find a hook that will fit them!
Hi there, I log on to your blog like every week. Your story-telling style is awesome, keep up the good work!
I don’t seem to see where you told how to make the earring holder? I am very interested. Please help!
