How To: Jewelry Wall, Part 1.

It’s Monday! Normally I’m not too excited about Monday morning, but today I get to continue sharing all of my fun closet projects so that makes me one happy girl. I’m seriously having so much fun sharing ideas and hearing all of your positive feedback. You guys are too kind!

In case you missed anything from last week, check out the {closet reveal}, {$15 organization tip} and {how to build a closet shelf} at each of those links.

As promised last week, today kicks off a series on how to build a wall of jewelry. Every time I type wall of jewelry I pretend it’s being said in a loud booming announcer’s voice. It’s much more fun that way. Or every time you read that phrase in this post, take a sip of coffee. Wall of jewelry, wall of jewelry, wall of jewelry. See? More fun.

For this project all you’ll need is a picture frame (any size) with the glass removed, and a piece of chicken wire. I looked high and low for the best place to buy chicken wire (err, I checked at Home Depot where they only sold large sheets) and on my second stop found that Ace Hardware sells it off the roll. You can have them cut it to size for you and it only cost around $2 for the sheet below.

Take the chicken wire and simply pop it into the back of the frame where you would normally put the glass. If you cut it the correct size, which is just slightly larger than the opening, you can bend the prongs to grip the back edges of the frame. Once it’s popped in, it’s not going anywhere!

Flip it around and start adding earrings! This whole project takes less than 5 minutes. Even my thinks-she’s-craft-challenged-but-she’s-not mother could do it. (Hi mom!)

When I first saw this idea floating around on Pinterest, I had no clue just how easy and in-expensive this project would be. Aren’t those the best kind of projects though?

So that’s where the wall of jewelry started. If you think this part was easy, check back tomorrow. I have a project for under $10 that will rock your world. Seriously.

What about you guys? Tackle any projects of your own this weekend?

I had done something like that for a display for craft shows to display earrings. I just love stuff like that. Simple creative and workable. I had people buying my display. You know in stores where there is this silver thingy and says the price inside? It is metal. I put plastic grid in it and on some, on the outside put sea shells, some had beads, I had just gotten creative with it. You are so creative. Love what you are doing with your new home!!

    Love ya

I would love to know to know where you got that frame! I love that size.

Hi Amy! We actually got this frame years ago for a wedding present but if I remember correctly, it came from Target.

Thanks Colleen! I found it at my local Ace Hardware for a couple dollars. They’ll cut you off as much as you need :) .

“If you cut it the correct size, which is just slightly larger than the opening, you can bend the prongs to grip the back edges of the frame.”

OK, maybe I’m being dense. But I’m not sure I follow what you’re saying here, and/or the picture doesn’t illustrate what I think you’re saying. Do you mean the rough edges of the chicken wire? Or the things that hold the back of the frame in place?

Love this idea! I just hung a bunch of hooks on the wall this weekend for my “costume” jewelry necklaces, but I’ve been searching for a good, inexpensive way to store/display my earrings for ages!

Kristen- The rough edges of the chicken wire can be bent a little and will grip the inside of the frame. Just cut the wire a little bigger than the frame and push it in the frame like you were putting in a picture. Then bend the edges just a bit so it will stay in place. Hope that makes a little more sense!

hi! great blog! I’ve done something similar; i no longer have it (lost during a move ) but i think it was magnetic. i don’t recall having put a metal back on it, and i definitely used magnets on it. so more possibilities there!

Love your site! I am in the middle of organizing my closet and am using lots of your great ideas. So, none of my local hardware stores (Ace, HD, Lowe’s) sell chicken wire by the sheet…only a large roll, which is only $12. Question is, what else could I use the chicken wire for since I’ll have a lot left? You have way better ideas than me! :)

Melissa- Try a window screen. I’m sure you could find an inexpensive one that would work great!

What did you use to cut the chicken wire? And are the little prongs of the chicken wire going in the glass/picture slot or no?

    • Jennifer November 14, 2012 at 8:42 AM #

Crystal- I used a set of wire cutters to cut the chicken wire. Once I popped the wire in, I bent the prongs a little to fit into the slot where the glass would go. Hope that helps!

    Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for the Jewelery organization ideas! For years I have used a fancy guest towel rod that I painted black to hold my necklaces in my Master Bathroom. I never had a good place to hold all of my earrings, though. I will be using your ‘AWESOME’ idea for earring organization! Thank you again! :-) ~ Corinne
