Make My Day. Or Yours.

I’m about to make your day. How would you like an awesome Black Friday deal that you can use right now from the comfort of your own home?

What? You’d love it. Me too.

Last night just before I went to bed I happened to double check the { RugsUSA website }. I’ve had my eye on a rug for the nursery but wanted to wait until Black Friday to see if I could get it for more than 35% off.

Last night I hit the jackpot. 75% off! I think I scared Justin when I jumped out of bed and ran upstairs mumbling something about a “super sale” and “rug”. Luckily he’s used to this kind of behavior and just rolled over and went to sleep.

Y’all, I got our nursery rug for 75% off!! If you head over there now you can find all kinds of amazing rugs for ridiculous prices just using the code “Black75″.

And in case you were curious, I ordered the Moroccan Trellis Rug in Charcoal. I wanted something a bit more grounded to keep the room from being too, too girly.

We’re almost done with a few of the big nursery projects so hopefully I’ll get to share them next week. Hope y’all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and happy shopping!!

Sneak Peeks.

As promised, here are a couple sneak peeks of the guest room. We’ve gotten all the basics in, now it’s all about the accessories!

You’ve seen this view before, but now you can catch a glimpse of the rug I bought on sale from Overstock.com. I love the boldness of the pattern mixed with such a neutral color. And at $90, you can’t beat the price! The bedding you see rolled up on the dresser is just waiting to be washed and draped across the bottom of the bed.

I was planning on making a large wood framed mirror to go above the dresser, but when I spotted this version in Homegoods yesterday for $29.99, I snatched it up. It’s unusual, rich in color and will add great texture to the space. I haven’t tried it out in the room yet so there’s always a chance I’ll go back to plan A, but fingers crossed it works!

While out and about, I also found a great clearance section at Lowe’s. I’ve been wanting to add a couple nice lanterns to the table on our deck and lo and behold, Lowe’s had just what I needed. I scored two lanterns, one big and one small, for around $15 total. The tag said each lantern was regularly $36. Um, yes. Yes, please.

I also have had my eye on this light fixture (below) for quite a while. At $50 it wasn’t too much of a budget buster, but Lowe’s had it marked down to $25. Done. This baby is getting tucked away for a bathroom project down the road. Oh, and did I mention I used an extra $10 off coupon on the whole Lowe’s purchase? Thrifty.

There you have it, my shopping cart in a glance. What about you guys? Find any great deals floating around out there?

First Nursery Purchase.

Hope you all had a fun and safe Labor Day weekend!

We took advantage of the long weekend by tackling a few items on our ever-increasing to-do list.

The biggest item we crossed off our list was,

buying the baby’s crib!

I’ve had my eye on the Kendall crib from Pottery Barn Kids for the past few weeks so we finally decided to bite the bullet and order it. We wanted a simple, white crib that was sturdy and well-made. Harder to find than you would think. We happened upon this model in the store one day and loved it. Pretty, simple and a great price. Can’t beat that!

We’re not planning on buying a quilt or a bumper, only a cute bed skirt and crib sheet. Bedding sets run around $200 and honestly, since you can’t even use a bumper or quilt with a newborn, I believe it’s money better spent elsewhere.

Oh and for anyone who’s been wondering, I’ve definitely popped. Yep, can’t hide this baby bump any longer. Here’s a pic from this weekend…

So weird. Justin says I’m definitely in the “not chubby and probably pregnant but wouldn’t ask if you were” stage. I’m A-ok with that.

As for the rest of the weekend, we scratched a few more items off our to-do list…

1. Buy a new mattress. Check!

Sears was having a great deal on mattresses, plus Ebates.com was offering an additional 6% cash back, so we ordered a new one for our bedroom and will be moving our current mattress to the guest room. I can’t wait to get everything switched over and start finally pulling the guest room together.

2. Buy a rug for the guest room. Check!

Overstock.com was having a great deal on rugs this weekend. An extra 10%, PLUS I found an extra coupon code to get an additional 12% off. It always pays to google “store” coupon codes. This is { the rug } I ordered and I’m keeping my fingers crossed it works in the space.

And finally here’s a little tip if you decide to go mega-shopping in one weekend. When you buy a crib, a mattress, a few online items and go massive grocery shopping, your bank will think your card has been stolen and call you to confirm. Especially if you’re normally a cheap-0 like me. At least they pay attention.

What about you guys? Any fun projects or great sales this weekend?

Reader Design: Placemat Pillow

I hope everyone had a fun and productive weekend and survived Monday! We’re up to our eyeballs in projects over here. Between doing work for clients and starting a few new house projects of our own, I’m seriously dreaming of lamps and chairs at night. This morning we’re finishing up our new window/door install so hopefully I’ll get to share a picture with y’all tomorrow. It’s amazing what changing a window can do for a space!

Until then, I want to share a fun take on one of my ideas that a reader sent me. A couple days ago I received this message from Astrid,

“These pillows are the result of combining your posts on how to turn a placemat into a pillow plus your news of a sale at World Market! $2.50 each plus the cost of batting for 2 new pillows for under $10. And just the splash of fun and color my apartment needed :) I also picked up some new patio furniture. Love reading your blog. Keep up the great tips!!”

Didn’t she do a great job?! I had to stop myself from running out of the door and going back to World Market as soon as I saw this picture. Two pillows for under $10, yes please. Thanks for sharing, Astrid!

If you have a project you’d like me to feature, email me at SomethingLikeThatDesigns@gmail.com !

World Market: 75% off.

First off, thank you guys SO MUCH for all the well wishes and congrats! It really did mean so much to us both and I feel lucky to have such great readers. Y’all rock!

Second, if you live near a Cost Plus World Market, go there ASAP. I saw { this post } last week and decided to check it out for myself. Holy deals! We were only in there for 20 minutes and snagged two great buys. In fact, if I can get morning (ahem, all day) sickness under control today, I’m going to hit up another location.

Here’s what we got…

I can’t find the exact outdoor table online, but it looks almost exactly like this one below. Perfect for dinners on our deck and you can’t beat the $65 price tag! 75% off, yes please.

I also grabbed this cute little chair. It was regularly $80 and I took it home for $20. It was the only one in the store so I made poor Justin lug it around everywhere so no one would snatch it. Rough life being married to an interior designer.

Now is the time to shop around for outdoor furniture since store are making way for new seasonal merchandise. I’m still looking for a few chairs for the table, a couple pots and a bench for our front door, but slow and steady wins the race. Or gets the best discount.

Happy shopping!

Designer Discount Website.

Hope you all have been having a wonderful week! It’s been busy over here which means lots of fun projects to share in the weeks to come. Today, I want to share with you one of my favorite designer discount sites, Joss & Main!

If you’re over the Groupon/Eversave/Million Deal Emails A Week phase (yep, me too), then you’ll love this site. It doesn’t offer discounted teeth whitening or car washes (thank goodness!). It’s just pretty things you’d love to have in your home. Basically, heaven.

Here’s a peek at one of their sales…

Great Rug, Even Better Price.

Today I’m excited to give you a tip on how to find a great rug in a custom size for a great price.

Great rug. Custom Size. Great price. Does it get any better than that?

In the entryway that I designed, I needed to find a floor covering that fit the unique space. I was looking for a rug that was nearly 15ft. long but only about 5ft wide. Not only is that harder to find, but it can get extremely costly. We’re talking in the thousands. I also needed a smaller rug in the same pattern to fit the smaller area at the end of the hallway. That’s a pretty specific set of requirements.

To get exactly what we needed, I would have had to custom order a rug and, well, that just wasn’t in the budget. Luckily, I managed to get the exact two rugs I needed for a fraction of what a custom rug would have cost. How?

Enter, my secret weapon. Carpet tiles. Yep, carpet tiles. That gorgeous rug in the photo above is made of carpet tiles. Who would have thought?!

The rug is made up of individual tiles like the one above. I used { this tile } and the clients couldn’t have been happier with the choice! These tiles hold up well to high traffic areas and if you should spill something and it won’t come clean, you can simply replace that one tile without replacing the whole rug. Brilliant!

The carpet tiles you’ve seen in office buildings are a thing of the past. There are a million colors and patterns you can choose from and they really do look fantastic in person. My tip would be to stick with patterns over solids since they tend to blend into a rug more easily.

There you have it–an inexpensive way to customize a rug. Sweet!

I Love Lamp. (Again.)

This week I’ve been working on a big project for a client. The final installation is on Saturday so I’ve been trying to find the last few pieces we need to complete the design. One of the main things I’ve been looking for is lamps. My inspiration came from two, rather expensive, lamps. This one from Pottery Barn for $150 (without the shade) and this one from west elm for $150 (with the shade). Pretty pricey, no?

I managed to find two great options at one of my favorite places in the world, Homegoods, that remind me of each of the inspiration lamps. Best part? Each lamp was only $39.99. Heck, yes.

Which one is your favorite?

Oven Lovin’.

Remember when I mentioned last week that I might have a 392743953297 pound oven sitting in my kitchen?

Well, I did. And it really did weigh a million pounds. In fact, it took FOUR people just to get it out of my car and up to the kitchen. Two of those people innocently came over to eat lunch. I might as well warn you now, we make you work for your food at the Smith house.

We hadn’t really planned on replacing the old double oven yet (even though it was 20+ years old and only one of the ovens worked), but when I found this deal there was NO way we could pass it up. I have two words for you, Habitat Restore.

Habitat Restore is a place where people donate building materials and when they’re sold, the proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity. It’s like a Goodwill that only sells things for the home. In other words, right up my alley. It’s located in Atlanta so I don’t go very often, but I am signed up to get their emails.

A couple weeks ago I got an email with a caption that caught my eye. They had a Kenmore Elite double oven for sale. That’s the exact same line both our dishwasher and refrigerator are from so I was immediately interested. I’d been pricing double ovens for the past few months and even on sale, and on sale some more, they are still at least $1,800-$2,000. When I called the store to ask about the price, I almost dropped the phone when they said it was $554. I very nearly ran to my car and drove straight down to Atlanta, but cooler heads prevailed.

If I waited until the morning and the oven was still there, I could get an extra 20% off due to a special promotion. I’m so glad I waited! I was standing at the front door at 9am sharp and ran straight for the oven. It was even more beautiful in person, but here were two problems,

1) there was no guarantee it would work and if it was returned, we’d only get store credit.

2) it was bigger than the current double oven so we weren’t sure if it would fit.

Taking a leap of faith, I snatched the tag and went up front to pay. It was a bit nerve wracking during the installation, but y’all, it works! And it fits! Hallelujah!

Here’s a reminder of what we started with

And here it is now!

We still need to order a piece of trim for the bottom and re-attach a piece of granite they had to remove above the dishwasher but other than that it’s perfect!

For a grand total of $450 we are now the owner of two beautiful stainless steel double ovens. Heck to the yes.

Morale of the story: you never know what great deal is just around the corner.

What about you guys? Any fun deals lately?

Paint Sale.

Just wanted to share with any of you that are thinking about taking on a few projects this Memorial Day weekend, Home Depot is having a great sale on paint! My favorite brand of paint, Behr Premium Plus Ultra (a mouthful!) has the paint and primer in one and really is fantastic. This weekend they have an extra $5 off a gallon. Score!

Now for the hard part…which color to get.
