Moodboard: Modern Living Room

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Our was filled with football, surprise dinner dates and lots and lots of crossing things off our to-do list. We finally had our new mattress delivered so we also got to do a little work on the guest room. I’ll share an “in progress” picture this week. There’s still a lot to be done, but we’re getting there!

Today, I want to share with you a moodboard I recently completed. This living room was for a client who liked lots of different accessories and pieces of furniture, but wasn’t sure how to pull it all together. This client was a perfect candidate for e-design. The e-design option gave her a direction for where to go and how to pull the entire room together at her own pace.

I have to say (and I know I say this with all my designs), I love this room. Cozy, modern and easy to change up if she ever gets tired of yellow. The client has already ordered the sofa and a couple of the chairs so I can’t wait to see how it all turns out!

If you’re having a hard time figuring out a direction to go with a room, e-design is a perfect option for you! Email me for prices and more information at SomethingLikeThatDesigns@gmail.com

Moodboard: Airy Living Room

Today I want to share with you a moodboard that I recently created for a client. I’m still in the middle of the project, so hopefully I’ll have a few great “before” and “after” pictures once installation is done.

The clients wanted a light, bright space with a few fun pops of color. Here’s what I came up with!

I’m a little obsessed with this color scheme. Juuust a little.

Design Delivery: Master Bedroom Reveal

Yesterday I started a fun new project so today it’s only fitting that I finish up sharing an old one. In case you missed the other parts, you can find the entryway { here } and the living room { here }.

I’ve said it before, but I really, really enjoyed working with this couple. Great clients always make for even better projects! The last room I’m sharing today is the master bedroom. They wanted a relaxing retreat and that’s just what they got. Here’s what we started with…

And here’s the plan, Stan. (Or umm, just put in your name. Only if it rhymes, though.)

(That limits it to man, wham, bam, Sam, ham. If your name is ham, you’re parents were just mean.)

Tada!

It’s been scientifically proven that your sleep with improve if you love your bedroom. And by scientifically proven I mean, I said so. It does make sense though. If you feel relaxed, it’s easier to sleep. Beautiful bedrooms = total relaxation. Enough said.

What do you think? Does this room just make you want to curl up and take a nap?

Design Delivery: Living Room Reveal

Since they say a picture is worth a thousand words, I’m going to let the pictures do the talking today. A couple things to keep in mind when you see the final room pictures: 1) we had just laid the rug down so if it looks bumpy, it’s because it was rolled up, 2) the lighting still hadn’t been installed so you’ll see a stray wire here and there. Nothing to fret about.

Ok, so here’s a quick reminder of the moodboard I revealed yesterday…

And here it is finished!

Wouldn’t you just love to call that room home? I have to admit I’m a bit jealous I can’t live there. Comfortable, classic and a bit of whimsy. What more could you want?

Moodboard: Living Room Retreat

Was last week weird for anyone else? It felt unusual to celebrate a holiday on a Wednesday and then resume the usual work week after that. I think if a holiday falls in the middle of the week it should be law that you get the rest of the week off. Amen?

Ok, good. Now that I got that off my chest, I’m here to share another moodboard! Remember this {entryway moodboard} that I shared a couple weeks ago? Well, this is the same project. This time I’m focusing on the living room.

The clients already had a lot of great items to work with: gorgeous gray sofas, a pretty wood coffee table (that the client made herself!), and a layout that worked for the space. They needed help with lighting, artwork, floor covering, pillows and accessories. Here’s what I came up with…

A classy, fun space for a classy and fun couple. I’ll be back tomorrow to share a few pictures of the finished space!

Modern Entryway Reveal.

Today I’m excited to show you the finished entryway! If you didn’t get to read yesterday’s post, you can catch up on that { here }. For those who want quick re-cap, I recently finished up work on an entryway, taking the space from old-fashioned country, to sleek and modern. Here’s another look at what I started with…

And here’s what I came up with…aka, The Plan Stan.

And finally, here’s a few after shots!

I’ll break down the project over the next few days and give you a few tips you can use in your own home. I LOVE this space and am so happy the homeowners are just as happy. Oh and see that gorgeous gray rug in the last picture, I’ll share that room with you soon. Is it wrong to be jealous of a client’s house? Because I totally am.

Someday, casa Smith you’ll be just as beautiful. I promise.

Moodboard: Modern Entryway

I just finished up a project for the sweetest couple you’ve ever met. Seriously, they are. They recently bought a gorgeous Southern style home (think large front porch) and needed some help updating the interior. I worked with them on their entryway, living room and master bedroom and I can’t wait to show you all the details! Today, I’m focusing on the foyer.

This is what we started with… yellow walls, a too-formal light fixture and lots of open space.

The couple wanted a more modern, comfortable space with ample storage. Since it’s such a large entryway, finding items like a rug to fit the space, or the perfect spot to drop off their keys and jackets took some finesse.

Here’s what I came up with!

I’m happy to say they loved it! Tomorrow I’ll share a few design tricks I used to create the space and later I’ll show you a few sneak peeks at the nearly finished space.

Can I just say, I love my job.

Today I’m excited to share a project with you that involves this….

While my friend Kristen is off dog sledding in Alaska, she asked me to guest post over on her blog, In Sweet Violets. Head on over there to see the fun design I came up with!

From Shabby to Chic.

You really never know who you’re going to meet or how they’ll come into your lives. For instance, I met Heather at a friend’s birthday party. I had no idea then that she would become my client, or better yet, that she would be the sweetest, easiest client you could ever ask for! Seriously. It was so fun to work with Heather to design the kitchen and dining room of her new condo, where she wanted something elegant and 40′s inspired. She e-mailed me these pictures of the space…

And I came up with this,

drumroll…

The design!

1. I suggested she paint all the doors white and add trim to give them an updated look. This is such an inexpensive way to add value to the space!

2. This is the wall color for the kitchen and the color of the kitchen cabinets. The wall color is a pale, icy gray that will look fantastic with the dark cabinets and newly painted white doors.

3. When I found this chandelier, I knew it had to go in the room. Happily, Heather loves it just as much as I do! This is such a statement piece, that it’s well worth the price tag. (Which wasn’t much by the way. It pays to have me find deals!)

4. This is the pattern I suggested she paint (or wallpaper) on the arched wall in the room. (It’s the wall in the photo second from the top on this page.) It’ll make a huge statement in the room, without costing a fortune. In fact, it’ll cost less than that dinner you ate out last weekend! And don’t think it’s too difficult to paint. I gave Heather easy tips for how to recreate this on her own.

5. These are the colors for the painted wall. The same shade as the kitchen, plus a few shades darker for the contrasting pattern.

6. Mirrored furniture can be really expensive, but silver-leafing is a really affordable way to get  a similar design aesthetic. I took something that was way over budget, and gave an easy option for 1/4 of the price!

7. Bar stools for the kitchen.

8. Dining room table.

9. I suggested pops of yellow to go in the room for a bit of contrast.

10. A fun, and yet subdued rug like this would be the perfect compliment to the space.

11. These chairs are fantastic. And really, really affordable. When added to each end of the table, they’ll make even the most inexpensive table look like it cost a fortune! It’s all about being smart with where you spend your money.

Well folks, there you have it. My design for Heather’s kitchen and dining room. I LOVE how it turned out and, better yet, so did she! I managed to take a really tight budget and turn it into an elegant space that looks like it cost much, much more. Heather is currently in the middle of translating my design from paper to real life, so I’ll share pictures of updates as I get them.

If you were at all on the fence about e-design, hopefully you’re not anymore. I’ll bet that when you were reading this post, you were thinking about a certain room in your home. Curious as to what I could do with that space? Email me. Chances are, you spend more at the grocery store last week then it would cost for me to give you a space that you’ll love.

P.S. The design information above is pretty basic. Heather actually got a lot more information, drawings and tips. To be fair to her, I’ve left that out of this blog post. If you have any questions about anything you’ve seen (or want to buy), email me for more information!

Fantastic Foyers.

When you walk into your home, what’s the first thing you see? Is it a blank wall? Or a hand-me-down table that you really don’t like, but aren’t sure how to make into something you’ll love?

There are always going to be areas in your home that get put on your to-do list. Areas that you’ll get around to when you have the time/money/energy to tackle them. That’s completely fine for the upstairs guest room that might get used a couple times a year, but for your foyer it’s not so practical.

When a visitor walks into your home, the entryway is the first place where they can get a glimpse of your style. Even if every other room in your house isn’t exactly how you’d like it, visitors will see the look you’re going for and be able to envision the rest of the house in the same style.

Not only will a fantastic entryway impress your guests, but it will also make you happier. (I’m serious!) Having at least one place in your home that you feel really reflects your personal style will make your home feel more comfortable and set the tone for the rest of the house. I’m 100% supportive of saving up and slowly going room by room, but that’s why I always recommend starting at the very beginning (a very good place to start…”The Sound of Music”…anyone?).

The best thing about foyers is that they don’t have to be expensive. Decide on how you’re going to use the space (i.e. storage, decorative, both…) and go from there. If you want to work with what you have, take a walk through the spray paint aisle. A coat of paint and new hardware does wonders for that old hand-me-down furniture. Add a couple fun accessories and some artwork and you’re done!

If you’re stumped and not sure where to start, I’m happy to help! Check out my Services page for more info. I can help makeover the furniture you already own, or help you source a piece to add to what you have. Remember, there’s no reason not to have an amazing entryway!
